Dreamcatching: group project 3D short

Posted in 3D, short films on July 4th, 2007 by annamations

Here is a low quality version of the short made in the second term of the MA by me and two other students, Sarah Hale and Justin Kent. Though a lot of difficulties with transferring data from XSI to Houdini, the result turned out pretty close to what we aimed for.

I was responsible for the visual look of the film (character design, storyboards, colour scheme) and shared the modelling, texturing, animation and rendering with Sarah and Justin. The idea is based on the Native American Legends of the Dreamcatcher, which allows good dreams through and captures nightmares which perish with the sun’s first light.

Dreamcatching storyboards in colour

Storyboards I made for our group project 3D short, Dreamcatching. Team members Sarah and Justin liked the general concept and colour scheme so I took the task of a sort of an art director since we all worked on developing the story and all sections of the film.

Drawn in pencil and coloured in Painter - using a wacom and digital paint was new and exciting to me so i got carried away and coloured all the storyboards, which helped to keep in mind the look, lighting and colours we were aiming for.

Petrified

My BA graduation film, thanks to divX you can watch it in full screen and good quality here:

http://stage6.divx.com/user/annamation/video/1410167/Petrified

Synopsis:A story about a little girl, Felicity, and her peculiar games. In her creative hands, her toys become special and individual, and always seem to resemble the new pet of the house. Tragically for the Cat, he ‘mysteriously’ suffers the same consequences as Felicity’s new toy.

This short 2D-animated film plays between the co-existence of both a sweet and dark element, creating an amusing situation with shocking consequences, thus reminding us that not everything is what it seems to be. A visual commentary on the loss of innocence in modern animation.

Petrified: Preproduction and Development

Posted in character design, Work in Progress, 2D , short films, backgrounds/layouts on June 30th, 2007 by annamations

My BA final year major project was a short 2D animation, Petrified. With a team of two second year animators, an illustrator (for the painted backgrounds) and film students specialising in producing, editing and sound we worked hard for 8 months to realise an idea that i pitched during my second year - but which changed and was improved and developed by the team.

Below are some stills showing the main preproduction development:

Backgrounds for grad film ‘My third Arm’

Posted in 2D , short films, backgrounds/layouts on June 26th, 2007 by annamations

These are some backgrounds I painted for Joe Bor’s graduation film My Third Arm. My first involvement in an animation team, during my first year. Although by the end of the 20 paintings I was sick of burnt umber and yellow ochre, it was a good experience and the film was shown, nominated and awarded in various competitions and festivals.
